Because People Like This Are Out There.

Helen Gym lays it down.

When I tell people that I'm opening a school, sometimes they ask, "Is it a charter school?" And I emphatically say no.

Not because charter schools are, by default, bad. Rather, because charter schools are the symptom of the privatizing disease hitting public education. The charter-school-as-solution-to-all-public-school-ills idea is mostly shuffling money around, and mostly away from the people it should be used to serve.

I'm happy that Helen Gym is calling it all out. I'm happy that parents and citizens like her are out there; she is the kind of thoughtful, engaged person our education should prepare us to be.
